Changing the landscape of non-small cell lung cancer disparities
In the United States, lung and bronchus cancers are the second most common types of cancer and are responsible for the largest number of deaths from cancer, with African Americans suffering disproportionately from lung and bronchus cancers. This disparity likely results from a complex interplay among social, psycho-social, lifestyle, environmental, health system, and biological determinants of health.

Renoprotective effect of direct renin inhibitor (aliskiren) during partial ureteral obstruction
Partial ureteral obstruction (PUO) is a major clinical problem in the daily urologic practice that is treatable and often reversible. Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is implicated in the pathophysiology of PUO as angiotensin II induces alterations in renal hemodynamics, apoptosis, inflammation and fibrosis. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) have been clinically used to recover the unfavorable functional and histological changes after relief of PUO.

Fertility treatments for men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
The diagnosis of azoospermia is a devasting one for men – and it represents the obliteration of so many unspoken hopes and expectations. Most causes of azoospermia are not amenable to treatment but those due to hypogonadotropic hypogonadism can respond to gonadotropin therapy. This can be a lengthy and expensive treatment, but it delivers an opportunity to men to restore, albeit temporarily, their production of sperm. Encouragingly, treatment is associated with good success rates, even outside of specialist clinics.

Chromatin dynamics: Nucleosome occupancy and sensitivity as determinants of gene expression and cell fate
The nucleosome, consisting of ~150bp of DNA wrapped around a core histone octamer, is a regulator of nuclear events that contributes to gene expression and cell fate. Nucleosome organization at promoters and their associated remodeling events are important regulators of access to the genome. Occupancy alone, however, is not the only nucleosomal characteristic that plays a role in genome regulation. Nucleosomes at the transcription start sites (TSSs) of genes show differential sensitivity to micrococcal nuclease (MNase) and this differential sensitivity is linked to transcription and regulatory factor binding events.

Management of traumatic fracture-dislocation of the shoulder in children: A systematic review of published case reports
Proximal humerus fracture with simultaneous shoulder dislocation in children is a rare occurrence, with few reported cases. This systematic review of case reports aimed to document the outcomes of different treatment methods. A comprehensive literature search from 1980 to 2024 included case reports on traumatic shoulder fracture-dislocation in children. Eighteen studies were included, with a mean followup of 1.5 years. The cases comprised 7 boys and 11 girls, aged between 11 months and 16 years (median 6 years). The cases were divided into two groups based on epiphysealinvolvement.

The action potential (AP) in cardiac tissue is important for initiating and coordinating contractions in the heart. In addition, the long refractory period minimizes the potential for developing extrasystoles and arrhythmias. The AP is generated by coordinate changes in different ionic currents. In human (or canine) adult ventricular cells, the depolarization phase of the AP is mainly through the influx of Na+ and Ca2+ through specific voltage gated channels.
Drosophila male germline stem cells and their transit amplifying daughters depend on G-protein signaling for increasing their mitotic indices in response to mating
In many metazoan tissues, highly specialized cells are constantly lost and need to be replaced by tissue homeostasis from adult stem cells. When adult stem cells divide by mitosis their daughter cells either become new stem cells, or enter a proliferation and differentiation path. Recent studies in Drosophila males showed that germline stem cells (GSCs) can increase their mitotic activity in response to repeated mating.
High exposure to pollution requires nutritional improvements in children
Sickness rates of children living in regions with extreme environmental pollution resulted in our study evaluating effects of 30-day supplementation with two different food supplements containing nucleotides, amino acids and polypeptides or β-glucan. This study was based on published studies evaluating these effects on children with chronic respiratory problems transported to the region without environmental pollution and into the medical program complemented with climatotherapy, speleotherapy, higher motion activity, rehabilitation, and a special nutritional program.
Craniovertebral junction abnormalities in children: Surgical, anesthetic and intensive care implications
The craniovertebral junction is unique and the most complex of the axial skeleton in multiple aspects; embryology, anatomy, pathology and kinematics. A surgical physiological approach to management of its abnormalities was instituted at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (UIHC) in 1977 and has been the accepted treatment algorithm worldwide.

In the previous study, Park et al. reported the efficacy of a single-cell protein manufactured from a growth-accelerated high-vital Corynebacterium glutamicum strain and potential strain selection strategy for development of non-GMO industrial strains harboring enriched target nutritional component, named as growth?acceleration?targeted evolution (G.A.T.E.) strategy [1].
Research update on the state of the evidence for stem cell and regenerative medicine in cerebral palsy
Stem cell therapy for the treatment of cerebral palsy is a rapidly expanding area of research that has been identified as a high priority by consumers. There are several types and sources of stem cell therapies under investigation. Stem cell treatments proposed for cerebral palsy are believed to provide benefit via some or all of the following mechanisms including immunomodulation, paracrine signaling and supporting endogenous reparative processes.
Deregulation of Slug/Snail2 and TGF-β crosstalk in airway epithelial stem/progenitor cells: A key link between COPD and lung cancer?
This commentary focuses on two recent publications showing deregulation of the transcription factor Slug/Snail2 and TGF-β function in primary bronchial basal/progenitor cells of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and the impact on proliferation and the expression of genes involved in stem cell maintenance. We discuss the molecular mechanisms related to the exhaustion of airway basal stem/progenitor cells in tobacco smoke-induced COPD, as well as putative links between COPD and lung cancer at the molecular level.
Cxcl17 and its association with T cells
We recently published an article describing the importance of CXCL17 in T cell responses [1]. In summary, we observed the following:
1) Cxcl17 is necessary to maintain normal ratios of T cell subpopulations in lymph nodes (LN).
2) Cxcl17-/- mice develop more intense inflammatory responses than wild type mice.
Observations on nascent matrix structures in embryonic cornea: Important in cell interactions, or merely vestiges of the lens surface?
Here we present some new observations on early stages in chick corneal development obtained by re-mining of datasets obtained via serial block face scanning electron microscopy. We focus on matrix cords, proteoglycan-rich structures of apparent ectodermal origin, emerging from the epithelial basal lamina, which extend proximally into the growing collagenous matrix destined to become the corneal stroma.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is characterized by multiple molecular and cytogenetic abnormalities, with increasing data to support clinical and prognostic implications to guide clinical decision making. One of the most well described mutations involves fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) that results in a constitutively active tyrosine kinase and is generally associated with poor prognosis involving shorter overall survival and higher rates of relapse.

Due to their impressive clinical success, CAR-T therapies are becoming a more mainstream treatment for patients with hematologic malignancies. Stem cell secretome-mediated alleviation of scalp psoriasis: A case report
Scalp psoriasis, a skin condition characterized by red, thickened (erythematous), well-demarcated patches or plaques with overlying silvery-white scales, affecting part or all of the scalp, is an autoimmune disease accompanied by itchy skin. The disease is associated with faulty functioning of adaptive and innate components of immune systems. The key pro- inflammatory cytokines mediating immunopathology of psoriasis are IL-17 and IL-23 which promote proliferation of Th 17 cells which in turn induce proliferation of keratinocytes leading to the disease.
High-LET targeted microbeam irradiation induces local chromatin reorganization in living cells showing active basal mechanisms at highly complex DNA damage sites
DNA repair eukaryotic cells have additional protective mechanisms that avoid uncontrolled interaction of different parts of the chromatin and damaged regions. Key factors here are the regulation of chromatin density and mobility. The 4D (temporal and spatial) organization of chromatin is controlling this security barrier by regulating the accessibility of genes, flexibility of DNA, and its ability to move inside the nucleus. How this regulation mechanisms are involved in DNA repair upon radiation damage is until now rarely known but an important part to understand the enhanced effectiveness of high linear energy transfer (LET) particles. The damage recognition via PARP1 and the subsequent chromatin decondensation via PARylation is a crucial step in the DNA damage response (DDR). Upon We used the SNAKE microbeam with a beam spot size of <1 µm to induce highly localized DNA damage in living cells using 55 MeV Carbon ions to investigate the chromatin rearrangements in the early stage of DDR.
