Biography

Former head of Haematology Department at the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona (Catalonia) and since 2017 Emeritus Prof. at the University of Barcelona and honorary researcher at the Josep Carreras Institute for Leukaemia Research More than 30 years of experience in clinical haematology diagnosis and laboratory management Leader of the Spanish External Quality Assessment Scheme for Hematology (EQAS-H) for 15 years.

Research Interest

Research activity mainly focused on diagnosis, epidemiology and genetics of hereditary haemolytic anaemias due red blood cell defects such as erythroenzymopathies, mainly glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiencies, RBC membrane disorders, mainly hereditary spherocytosis (HS) and hemoglobinopathies manly thalassemias and sickle-cell disease (SCD). Herewith more than 400 publications Since 2002, coordinator of the European Network for Rare and Congenital Anaemias (ENERCA) that in 2017 expanded to all rare hematological diseases with the name of EuroBloodNet Since 2017, research leader of the Clinical Ektacytometry Unit at the Institute for Leukaemia Research Josep Carreras (IJC) in Barcelona.
