Commentary on: Some aspects of rehabilitation of the disabled elderly at the present stage
According to the United Nations, to date the number and proportion of elderly grows much faster than in other age groups. The increase in the total number of elderly persons in the population of the globe makes the actual problems of social and economic consequences of population ageing. The issue of ensuring the quality of life of older people becomes an important and urgent task of the state.
Rehabilitation and return to work
Levels of disability and health-related work absence continue to increase, yet the risk assessment and modern medicine aimed at mitigating ill health and work absence also continues to increase. There is evidence to suggest that the interaction between health and work, the economic work loss, and the influence of long-term sickness absence on health and social inequality is an important consideration for researchers and clinicians in healthcare.
Provincial situation of elderly population in Nepal
The world is witnessing a rapid demographic shift towards an aging population. People are living longer due to advances in education, technology, medicine, food distribution, and sanitary conditions. According to the 2011 census data, Nepal had a total of 2,154,003 elderly 60 years and above which accounts for 8.1 percent of the total population of Nepal.
Electroconvulsive therapy in the elderly: An update
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains one of the most effective treatments for depression, catatonia and other conditions. Additionally, it appears to be particularly efficacious in the elderly population. Furthermore, since ‘Electroconvulsive Therapy in Geriatric Psychiatry: A Selective Review’ was previously published there has been additional evidence of not just ECT efficacy in this subset of the population, but also its safety. This commentary will aim to inform others about advances in this uniquely effective treatment consistent with the latest treatment guidelines and evidence.
Impact of sex on premature mortality for elderly patients with early adenocarcinoma of the esophagus or stomach
Background: In a recent study, it was shown that patients with pT1 adenocarcinoma of the esophagus or stomach have a shorter survival time compared to an age- and gender-matched group from the normal population despite curative therapy. The reasons for the loss of expected life years (YLL) can only be discussed. The aim of the present evaluation is to analyze the influence of the patients' gender on the results.
